PowerShell Abstracts

Excel and PowerShell. Doug Finke

This talk will walk through using the PowerShell module to import/export Excel spreadsheets, without Excel needing Excel installed.
See how you can take Get-Process and create a spreadsheet, pivot tables, charts, filtered tables, conditional text formatting and more.
All at the command line.
Get-Process |
Export-Excel C:\Temp\ps.xlsx `
-AutoSize -AutoFilter `
-IncludePivotTable -IncludePivotChart
-PivotRows Company -PivotData @{PM=’Sum’}
Here is result. Plus, the Get-Process data is on a separate work sheet in the same workbook.

Visual Studio Code and PowerShell . Doug Finke

Microsoft released a new editor, Visual Studio Code. VS Code lightweight, fast, highly customizable and has good open source energy. Plus, the Microsoft PowerShell team delivered a new extension for Visual Studio Code which provides improved PowerShell language support including IntelliSense, code navigation, real-time script analysis, and local script debugging.
This walk is a hands on demo on how this all works.

PowerShell v5 Classes and Object Patters in PowerShell. Tome Tanasovski

Objects objects everywhere and now they’re yours to drink! Version 5 of PowerShell introduces a new “class” keyword that allows you to develop in a more traditional object-oriented way. During this session, Tome will dive deep into examples of how to use this new mode. Additionally, he will walk you through the myriad of additional ways to do object-oriented programming that work with previous versions of PowerShell. You will leave this session with a tool belt of techniques that you can use immediately to tighten up your code and an understanding of when it makes sense to do so.

Integrating Source Control and Pester Testing into your workflow when Creating PowerShell Scripts, Modules or Configurations. Ryan Yates

We will have a look at how using Git along with Pester and some of the lesser known features that you can include to make the process more easier to follow and more likely to be a success – this is a session that the audience could follow along to and start implementing into their workflows right there in the session.

Accelerated Toolmaking: Creating CIM Commands without CDXML. Jeffery Hicks

There’s no doubt that the CIM classes offer a wealth of new functionality, especially when exposed as new commands using CDXML. You can even create your own CDXML-based tools. But it is hard! In this session I will share with your my process and tools for quickly creating new PowerShell tools based on the CIM cmdlets and WMI/CIM classes that don’t rely on any knowledge of CDXML.

Start-Process PowerShell | Get-ForensicArtifact. Jared Atikinson

Recent intrusion into the networks of organizations like Office of Personnel Management, Sony, JPMorgan Chase, and British Airways have shown that the question isn’t “if” your organization will be targeted, but “when”. With these attacks and many others in recent years, incident response teams have had to rapidly change tactics from the “image-and-forget” methodology to live box forensics and containment. During these engagements, forensic analysts must actively track and monitor an adversary in their network while preventing the adversary from recognizing detection but most tools are not up to the job. PowerShell brings the flexibility and in-memory nature to defenders to tackle live threats.

In this talk, I will cover how my project, PowerForensics, can provide the Digital Forensics/Incident Response community with an all in one toolset for attack response and investigation. By leveraging PowerShell’s access to the Windows API and .NET framework, PowerForensics provides investigators with a forensically sound “live” investigation platform without the need to image the hard drive. I’ll cover the background and overview of PowerForensics, including how its various capabilities can facilitate the investigation of advanced actors at scale. Finally, I’ll cap off with a complex demo, showing how PowerForensics can help blue teams investigate the real attacks they’re now facing.

Tuning SQL Server for SharePoint Daniel Glenn

We will discuss SQL and SharePoint integration concepts, walk through the different types of SharePoint databases, and get you more comfortable with the SharePoint platform. Some of the topics covered will include: the configuration steps and settings needed for SQL Server to properly host SharePoint databases, database size considerations, the SQL permissions SharePoint administrators need, and why SharePoint databases have a GUID in their name (and how to avoid them!).

Building a Configuration Management Database (CMDB) on SharePoint OnlineScott Brewster

All IT departments need to keep track of assets for which they are responsible from the physical servers, virtual servers, switches, to IP addresses, software, licenses, and other less tangible things. Many shops keep all of their IP addresses on a spreadsheet and prove just how bad it is when multiple people need access at any given time. Scott is going to show you how to keep track of all of those configurable items using SharePoint to improve your IT shop’s collaboration and communication because 90% of all downtime is due to a bad change in the environment. Starting with the CMDB, you’ll see how you can expand it to enable change management, release management, and more based on the ITIL framework.

SharePoint Online will be used for demonstrations, but we will also highlight the differences with it and SharePoint on-premises.

SharePoint Analyst Build ProcessScott Brewster

From building a list or library to larger solutions, there are steps one should follow to gather the requirements, plan, build, and deliver. In this session, I’ll show you the process I use as a SharePoint analyst and information architect to create the solutions as fast as possible while taking into account the fact that you might need to duplicate the solutions for other departments.
